The Environment and Children’s Health
Children have unique biology and the fact that their organs are rapidly developing makes them more vulnerable to environmental risk factors than adult. Children’s health problems as a result of environment holds high burden of disease worldwide and is a critical public health problem. Healthy and clean environment is a fundamental human need, especially for children as they have little control over their surrounding and are not aware of those risks in the environment (2). In addition, children behave differently and thus have different patterns of exposure than adult, for instance, children crawling on the ground might be susceptible to chemicals in soils (1).
Children fall too often the victims of adult environment; therefore, action needs to be taken to recognize susceptibility of children to specific environmental risk factors (3). Moreover, introduce ways to prevent their exposure to those risks, so to allow children a safe health environment where they grow up healthy and in turn contribute in future development.
Children’s environmental health problems involve many areas of exposure with drastic consequences on children. These risk factors are to be compared in the context of low income and high-income countries.
